YouTube has launched a new feature for its short-form video platform, Shorts, that allows users to remix their favorite music videos and create their own unique versions. The feature, called Remix, gives users four options to choose from: Sound, Collab, Green Screen, and Cut. Each option lets users manipulate the audio or video of a music video and add their own creative touch. For example, users can use the Sound option to lip-sync or dance to the music video's audio, or use the Collab option to create a split-screen video with the music video. Users can also use the Green Screen option to use the music video as the background of their video, or use the Cut option to select a 5-second clip from the music video and add it to their video.

The Remix feature is available on the music video's page, next to the Share button. Users can tap the Remix button and choose one of the four options to start remixing. However, not all music videos are eligible for remixing, as some artists or music labels may have opted out of the feature.

YouTube says that the Remix feature is a way to connect and get creative with the favorite artists and their music on YouTube. The feature also leverages YouTube's vast library of official music videos, which is something that its competitors, such as TikTok and Meta's Reels, do not have. YouTube also claims that it is the only platform where users can watch the music video on repeat, check out other Shorts that have been created from the same song by fellow fans, and discover deep catalog cuts from their favorite artists and relive those moments by remixing them as their own.

The Remix feature is rolling out to YouTube creators starting February 15. YouTube also says that it is testing other features for Shorts, such as vertical live streams, a recomposition tool, and a new app called Create, which offers AI-powered tools to make video editing easier and faster. YouTube is clearly investing a lot in its Shorts feature, and wants to make it more fun and creative for its users.
