Nothing, a London-based consumer technology brand, has announced that it will manufacture its upcoming smartphone, Nothing Phone (2a), in India. The company, founded by former OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, said that it wants to leverage the rich manufacturing ecosystem of the country and create job opportunities for the local economy. Nothing also revealed that it has a long-term vision of making India its export hub for its products.
The Phone (2a) will be the second smartphone from Nothing to be made in India, following the Phone (2), which was launched in January 2024. The Phone (2a) is expected to be a more affordable version of the Phone (2), which features a unique transparent design that showcases the internal components of the device. Nothing claims that its transparent design requires adherence to the highest global quality standards, and that it has brought these processes to India.

Nothing's decision to manufacture in India aligns with the government's Make in India initiative, which aims to boost the domestic production of electronics and reduce imports. India is the second-largest smartphone market in the world, with over 500 million users. Several smartphone makers, including Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and Google, have set up or expanded their manufacturing facilities in India in recent years.

Nothing also said that it plans to build India as an export hub for its products in the future, tapping into the global demand for its innovative and distinctive devices. The company said that it has received positive feedback from customers and critics alike for its Phone (2), which offers a premium experience with a minimalist and transparent design. The Phone (2a) is expected to bring the same philosophy to a wider audience, with a lower price tag and some compromises in specifications.

The Phone (2a) will be launched in India on March 5, 2024, along with other markets. The company has not revealed the price or the availability details of the device yet, but it is likely to compete with other mid-range smartphones in the Indian market. Nothing has also hinted that it is working on other consumer technology products, such as earphones, smartwatches, and laptops, that will follow its transparent design language. The company said that it aims to create a seamless and connected ecosystem of devices that will redefine the user experience.
